Today Twelve South is debuting its all-new PowerCord – an elegant “all-in-one power solution delivering sleek design and built-in charging. Twelve South has long been among our favorite Apple and tech accessory makers, and today is introducing a simple and to-the point new charging product known as PowerCord.
New Twelve South PowerCord
The brand says PowerCord “breaks the mold of today’s power cables.” As opposed to messing around with separate wall chargers and USB-C cables, it combines to two into one handy, albeit simple, charging solution so we can “finally get back to straightforward wall-to-device charging—simpler, faster, and, most importantly, frustration-free.”
Available in two lengths – 4 feet and 10 feet – on one end you’ll find a relatively slimline outlet connector that plugs right into the wall/power source with a simple and to-the-point USB-C jack on the other end.
The actual power unit inside the PowerCord is 30W – that’s not particularly powerful these days, but considering it can only power a single source anyway, it gets the job done nicely for everything from “the latest iPhones to Google Pixel, USB-C iPads, Android devices, earbuds, and even lightweight laptops like MacBook Air—PowerCord is built to charge them all. With smart PD 3.0 output and a wide input range, it’s your all-in-one charger for today’s most versatile tech.”
Features at a glance:
- No need to match cables to adapters.
- Fast, 30W PD 3.0 charges all your USB-C devices.
- Compatible with USB-C phones and devices.
- Flat, durable cable stays tangle-free.
- Low-profile plug fits easily in tight spaces.
The new Twelve South PowerCord is now available for purchase directly from the brand and over at Amazon – the 4-foot model is $39.99 and the 10-foot is $49.99.
After getting a chance to test out both the white/dune and slate/black models in both sizes for a few days now, the first thing that stood out for me was the attention to detail and overall quality of the cable. All things considered this is in some ways just a power cable, but it is nicely made with finger grooves on the sides of the outlet connector where you’ll find subtle embossed Twelve South branding and the actual cable lead is very nice. It is a braided and slightly textured treatment that is obviously better quality than most – it also particularly easy to work with and features an “extremely” tangle-free treatment. It might one of the nicest USB-C cables I have.
I also love the red cable tie it comes with too – it just looks really nice and works well. The sort of pin and hold clasp here features a nice silver treatment with an embossed Twelve South logo on it too.
The next thing I thought of was, it’s just a…power cable? You can’t even remove the USB-C cable to use it elsewhere and folks already have a million cables and chargers laying around don’t they?
Well yes, this is all true, but that’s the point here. It’s supposed to be a super simple, hassle-free solution for folks that just don’t need to or want to mess around with separate cables and charging units. This I can appreciate for sure, I’m not sure I can always afford taking up an entire outlet for a single charging source these days and I wish it was closer to 65W or (a lot) more.
All of that said, it is a particularly elegant product, and I can certainly see folks with minimalist setups appreciating the basic power connection action and especially the elegant design. Some friends I have shown it to privately were immediately impressed with the look, and loved the idea of not having to mess with charging blocks that stick off the wall to far or having to move USB-C cables around and the like. And frankly, I’m starting to come around with this perspective as well.
