Tested: The entire length of the STATIK MagStack Pro USB-C Cable is magnetic

A black cable on a box

It’s not easy to innovate when it comes to USB-C cables. You can make them out of fancy materials, or up the data transfer and power passthrough, you can even add LEDs or a little display on them with facial expressions, but when I bumped into the STATIK MagStack Pro magnetic USB-C Cable again, I thought it was time I actually tried one for myself. Does anyone really need a magnetic USB-C cable?

9to5Toys’ Take

I’m guess in many ways a cable is a cable. We all need more than a couple USB-C cables these days, and perhaps even more than that. For me, the real name of the game here is scoring some relatively well-made and reliable cables that don’t cost a fortune, so I can have some at the ready in the home office, some in my EDC, and maybe even some in my travel kit without having to keep packing and unpacking my setups.

Like most tech, the more you spend the better it is…usually. And you can usually find some good deals right when you need them here at 9to5Toys to land some good quality data and charging leads to fit the bill.

All of that said, not all cables are made equal no matter what price range your in – some can deliver more power than others, and some feature braided woven exteriors, and some are even magnetic. This Statik cable is all of those things.

But we are not talking about a third-party MagSafe 3 cable for the power port in your MacBook. No, this is far more unique than that.

The Statik cable is a solid woven USB-C cable that delivers power and data pass though, sitting right alongside much of its competition out there – it’s not the fastest but the 100W is respectable. Where it stands out from the competition is the magnetic design – the entire length of the cable is laced with a magnetic treatment, allowing it to coil up like a snake and stand at attention like you’re seeing in the imagery here (this isn’t some kind of trick – it is indeed standing up on its own there). And I don’t just mean the cable ends are magnetic like we have seen from the new Nomad ChargeKey tool, the entire length of the cable can stick to it self, and really anything else magnetic too.

Okay so who cares? Why wouldn’t anyone want this? Well, for organization purposes of course.

Yes you could just use one of those cable ties – it effectively works much the same in most practical situations. But there is something nice and convenient about the magnetic Statik vibe here.

If you’re just packing a cable away in your EDC kit or travel bag you can of course just make the argument that a cable tie is just as convenient. But when the cable is out being used the magnets can be useful – I also like that I can stick the cable to desk legs and things of that nature, but again that’s not particularly useful really and the magnets aren’t really strong enough to stick it in place in my testing.

You can easily adjust the amount of lead you need between say a wall charger and your gear for example at a moment’s notice – no fiddling around with the cable tie to adjust the amount of lead you need free and how much ought to be coiled up and organized so the excess isn’t flailing all over the place.

Okay got it…but do I really need this?

Well, no. Not really. It’s just pretty cool, and, in some cases, mildly convenient. But not a whole lot more.

I’ve never really been all that bothered with the cable I’m using providing it’s not too long and it’s made of a good quality weave I can trust. So while you don’t need the STATIK MagStack Pro cable by any means, it can be quite convenient in the sense that it can be about as long as you need and is just a good quality cable even without the magnets.
