Update 4/24: HORI’s officially-licensed Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant Camera is now available for pre-order at Target and Best Buy.
The all-new Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is cool and all. It has some sweet tracking features, appears to seamlessly integrate into a number of Switch 2 exclusive games, and we had a blast testing it out in person yesterday alongside Switch 2. But it’s not a Piranha Plant, and it can’t close its mouth like this official-licensed HORI Switch 2 cam that recently surfaced online.
HORI Switch 2 Piranha Plant Camera
The new HORI Switch 2 Piranha Plant Camera, which was recently spotted up for preorder on a German online retail site via VGC, appears to be an official new Switch accessory – it has the official Switch 2 logo right on its warp pipe base and packaging alongside “Super Mario” branding. We don’t have any hard details from the company yet, and it has yet to appear on the U.S. HORI site, but HORI is an official Nintendo Switch accessory maker and this very much appears to be the real thing – it remains unclear whether or not it will make it stateside.
Clearly made to look like the iconic Piranha Plant from a multitude of Mushroom Kingdom releases over the years, this is indeed an actual USB camera made to work with the Switch 2 by the looks of it. You can remove the stem (body?) of the plant from the warp pipe base and connect it directly the top of your Switch 2, or leave it resting in its magical pipe up on the mantle or TV stand.
The actual specs on the sentient flora cam remain elusive as well – is this thing actually going to work like the official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera?
We were told at the private Switch press event in NYC yesterday that just about any USB-C camera will work on Switch 2, but the details were scant at best. It remains to be seen what sorts of tricks the official camera has built-in, but it certainly isn’t a Piranha Plant and it can’t close its mouth for privacy quite like this one can.
We will update this post with more details and U.S. listings if/when they come available. As of right now, based on European pricing, looks as though it will sell for $10 less than Nintendo’s.
In the meantime, scope out our hands-on video of Switch 2 right here, some images we took of the official Switch 2 Camera, and more details on Nintendo’s new gaming webcam below:
Share your game screen while chatting to show what you’re up to. And for a more personal touch, connect face-to-face with the Nintendo Switch 2 camera or other compatible USB-C camera (each sold separately).
